What can I add to my oatmeal chocolate chip cookie dough so it does not taste so bland?

Q. I used the following recipe and my cookies came out a little chewy but flavorless. Truthfully, they are quite bland. Is there any way to remedy the remaining dough for a more flavorful cookie?

1/2 cup salted butter with 1/2 cup cinnamon applesauce
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 cups quick-cooking oats
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar until smooth.
Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt; stir into the creamed mixture until just blended.
Mix in the quick oats and chocolate chips. Chill mix for 2 hours.
Drop chilled dough by heaping spoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet.
Bake for 12 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

A. So you have a recipe that needs a little somethin' somethin'. Experimenting with recipes is one of my favorite things! However, it can either be fun, or fraught with disaster. I think I can help point you in the right direction with these cookies.

First off, I would not hesitate to up the salt to 1/2 tsp. But since you are using salted butter, no more than that.

This looks like a great recipe. I like the use of the applesauce which not only cuts back fat but should add some extra flavor with the added cinnamon. If you really want to turn up the volume I would add some more spices. I love an oatmeal cookie with a little kick. Try adding in:

Another 1 tsp Cinnamon, and...
1/2 tsp Nutmeg

You could also add between 1-1 1/2 tsp of Pumpkin Pie Spice or Allspice as well. These spices blend well with the chocolate and make an ordinary oatmeal cookie much more interesting.

In addition to the spices, try dried cherries instead of chocolate chips. They plump right up during the baking process. They are amazing! A mix of dried cherries and white chocolate chips would be good too. Or butterscotch chips.....or toffee chips.

You could also swap the vanilla extract for almond or another flavor. OH! Spices, dried cherries, white chips, and almond extract. That sounds worth trying! (When using pure almond extract, use HALF of what the measurements for vanilla would be.)

Hmmmm.....this is very motivating. I think I have to go make cookies. ;o)

Have fun and good luck!
