Q. Why do you have to add salt to chocolate chip cookies? My daughter doesn't want to add it I told her it makes the cookies taste different, therefore it needs to be added.
A. This is a great question! Most people are hesitant to add salt to their sweets. It does seem like a bit of a contradiction, when in actuality the salt enhances the flavors of the cookie. Adding salt to chocolate chip cookie dough is done for the same reason we put salt on the dinner table. We want to brighten the way the food tastes.
Salt, however, can be bad if too much is added. That is why I highly recommend baking with unsalted butter only. This way YOU control the amount of salt that goes into the recipe.
To make your point you may suggest your daughter baking a batch of cookies without salt and you bake a batch with salt. A bit of a throw down if you will. :o) Tasting is believing.
